There’s also a location in Hatfield that we’ve driven by a few times, but we’re never seeming to do it at lunch time. But a recent trip down to Chicopee (to the most unusual Hu Ke Lau that’s still doing Polynesian dinner shows, and worthy of it’s own review at some point) ended up with us being in Northampton right around lunch, and we finally go to duck in. Overall, despite the popover (which I might get one more time in case my salty one was a one-off error), I rather enjoyed Smithsonian. The sandwiches were well executed, the soups very enjoyable with an extremely good selection, and the staff pleasant. I’ll definitely drop in another time for lunch if in the area. All too often New England clam chowder ends up being a creamy, glue-ish mess (one reason I prefer Rhode Island chowder, since sins can’t be hidden under a cream sauce), but that wasn’t the case here, with a smooth, creamy, and very flavorful and clam-rich chowder, one of the better ones we’ve had recently.

First of all, let’s talk about the soup menu. Often, this is a warning flag to me, indicating that the place is just reheating big vats of pre-packaged soup, but the pleasant aromas indicated that these were quality soups, myself settling on the lazy golumpki soup, and Carol going for the classic clam chowder. The lazy golumpki soup (I think the “lazy” means that instead of doing the traditional making of it from leftovers, you’re just adding the ingredients for a golumpki to the soup) wasn’t shabby at all, despite the name. It was a rich, flavorful blend of meat, cabbage, tomato, and spices, reminding me well of the many pleasant cabbage rolls I’ve had in my life (seeing that Carol and I are both of Polish and Lithuanian heritage). I’d definitely enjoy another cup of this, especially since unlike most restaurant soups it wasn’t over-salted.

I’ve discovered several great places that way (and a few marginal ones as well, to be honest), but one of our more frequent day trip destinations in Northampton, MA. It’s a nice little college town, with a yarn shop that Carol likes (Webs), a great tea shop, and a lot of little restaurants. This first period and Georgian architectural “fabric” is today considered significant to American architectural, maritime, and cultural history. The latter were those whom Emmerton hoped to help through her settlement house, which still operates today in its original function and serves the immigrant and working-class residents of the immediate area. However, the renown of the building as house museum has also made it a big tourist draw, contributing to the gentrification of the beautified waterfront portion of Salem, complete with nearby bed and breakfasts. Emmerton’s goal was to preserve the house for future generations, provide educational opportunities for visitors and use the proceeds from the tours to fund her settlement programs.

Facing south towards Salem Harbor, it was originally a two-room, 2+1⁄2-story house with a projecting front porch and a massive central chimney. Four windows of the original ground-floor room (which became a dining room) remain in the house's side wall. The Counting House, circa 1830, is typical of the small buildings located on and around the then busy wharfs of Salem Harbor. This is a group program of various education and training sessions that will be 30 minutes in duration. Multiple sessions can be scheduled, for example 1 education and 1 training, or 2 training. It is not recommended scheduling 2 educational sessions consecutively. Because playing with peers increases social abilities, confidence, identity, and overall skill perspective we provide a weekly competitive environment.

When we help you improve your game, it makes us have to improve our game, too. We offer table tennis education and training services through a three level system that is transparent, scalable, motivational, and efficient. Players can see the entire system and monitor their progress.

Level 3

There is no reason to quit coming to our club after just few days or weeks or even few months. Most serious club table tennis players understand how complex table tennis is and don’t think of you as any less of an athlete or a person even if you keep losing to most other club players for years to come. Most are more than willing to help you nonetheless, in every way possible to improve your skill level, regardless of whether you are an absolute beginner or even an advanced player. Even if you are not interested in spending lots of money on equipment, you can get a good “basic” setup for less than $100 that can last for years.

The skills test and cumulative exam will require a passing score to unlock the next educational level. Each education level has a corresponding training package. Players use the training service to help get a passing grade on the final examinations. A recreational ping-pong player's first visit to a competitive table tennis club can be daunting. There are youngsters whose shoulders barely clear the tabletop hitting forehand topspin balls at astonishing velocity and octogenarians whose skill with long pips rubber makes the ball seem to defy the laws of physics. Many of us grew up playing ping-pong in a basement or garage, with a recreational or even homemade table and hard rubber pips out paddles from Sears.

Youth

Each player serves two points in a row and then the service switches to the other player. However, if a score of is reached in any game (deuce), then each server serves only one point at a time until one player wins two points in a row. In the final game (i.e., 5th game of a 3/5 match), the players switch sides again after EITHER player reaches 5 points and then play resumes as normal. Now the club and academy are working to provide an educational environment for everyone.

However, a game must be won by at least a two point margin (11-9 for example). A table will be made available in the open area for multiple youth to play while waiting for a session, after, or in between sessions. There is a small surface lot with a very limited number (10) spaces. This lot is NOT available before 6 PM on weekdays or before 1 PM on Sundays.
