Organization History
This first period and Georgian architectural “fabric” is today considered significant to American architectural, maritime, and cultural history. The latter were those whom Emmerton hoped to help through her settlement house, which still operates today in its original function and serves the immigrant and working-class residents of the immediate area. However, the renown of the building as house museum has also made it a big tourist draw, contributing to the gentrification of the beautified waterfront portion of Salem, complete with nearby bed and breakfasts. Emmerton’s goal was to preserve the house for future generations, provide educational opportunities for visitors and use the proceeds from the tours to fund her settlement programs.

The house of the title is a gloomy New England mansion, haunted since its construction by fraudulent dealings, accusations of witchcraft, and sudden death. The current resident, the dignified but desperately poor Hepzibah Pyncheon, opens a shop in a side room to support her brother Clifford, who has completed a thirty-year sentence for murder. She refuses all assistance from her wealthy but unpleasant cousin, Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon. A distant relative, the lively and pretty young Phoebe arrives and quickly becomes invaluable, charming customers and rousing Clifford from depression. A delicate romance grows between Phoebe and the mysterious attic lodger Holgrave, who is writing a history of the Pyncheon family. Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, founded the present day museum to assist immigrant families who were settling in Salem.

Ceilings in this new wing are higher than the very low ceilings in older parts of the house. The new wing featured double casement windows and an overhang with carved pendants; it was capped with a three-gabled garret. John Turner III inherited the house in 1769 and removed one of the gables, bringing it back to seven. In 1782, financial ruin from the Revolutionary War forced him to sell the property to merchant Samuel Ingersoll. Ingersoll removed four more gables and the rear kitchen additions (1794) to impose symmetry on the building, which resulted in a boxy, Federal-style house.

Facing south towards Salem Harbor, it was originally a two-room, 2+1⁄2-story house with a projecting front porch and a massive central chimney. Four windows of the original ground-floor room (which became a dining room) remain in the house's side wall. The Counting House, circa 1830, is typical of the small buildings located on and around the then busy wharfs of Salem Harbor. In fact, there were many more wharfs present in the harbor in those days than there are now.
Tours last approximately 45 minutes and take place on multiple levels in historic houses from the 1600s and 1700s. Visitors are standing, walking, or climbing stairs during these experiences. The entire area surrounding the house was designed by landscape gardener Dan Foley. The flower bed in front of the home contains thyme, lavender, tarragon, sweet woodruff, baptisia, statchys lanata (lambs ears), monarda (bee balm or bergamot), allium (onion relative), epidenium, achillea (yarrow) and hosta. While inside the building, look for “checking” or splitting in the oldest beams and note that at some point these were filled with plaster.
